My art as part of Conjuring Love: A Celebration of Motherhood, Feminism, and Artistic Expression

new bookAs an artist and feminist, I find immense honor in being a part of Conjuring Love: A Collection of Poems & Artworks/Conjurando amor: una colección de poemas y obras de arte. This collaboration, curated by Leslie C. Sotomayor, delves deep into the multifaceted experiences of motherhood, love, embodiment, and danger, offering a poignant reflection on the complexities of womanhood. Through poetry and visual art, we embark on a journey through the highs and lows of life, celebrating the magic of love while acknowledging its capacity to both uplift and challenge us.

Divided into four parts—M(other)ing, L(over)s, Embo(died), and D(anger)—Sotomayor’s poems serve as a profound exploration of her personal narrative, intertwining themes of heartache, loss, trauma, and self-discovery. It’s a raw and honest portrayal of the human experience, inviting readers to reflect on their own relationships and identities.

What truly sets Conjuring Love apart is its collaborative nature. Poetry is accompanied by artwork specifically crafted in response, creating a dialogue between words and visuals that transcends traditional boundaries of expression. As an artist contributing to this project, I’ve had the privilege of engaging with Sotomayor’s poetry on a deeply personal level, channeling my own experiences and emotions into visual form. It’s a symbiotic relationship, where art serves as a mirror, reflecting the essence of the written word, and poetry becomes a muse, inspiring creativity and introspection.

The artists involved in this book—myself, Avery Castillo, Annette Hestres, Sara Ishii, June (Juniper) Ramsay—have brought their unique perspectives and talents to the table, enriching the narrative with diverse voices and visions. Together, we’ve woven a tapestry of emotions, experiences, and reflections, inviting readers to immerse themselves in the beauty and complexity of human connection.

Conjuring Love is more than just a collection of poems and artworks; it’s a celebration of resilience, empowerment, and the transformative power of art. It challenges societal norms and amplifies the voices of mother artists, offering a platform for their perspectives to be heard and valued. In a world where women’s experiences are often marginalized or silenced, projects like this are essential in promoting inclusivity and representation.

As we navigate the intricate dance of love and life, let us embrace the magic of conjuring love—not only as a source of joy and inspiration but also as a catalyst for growth and self-discovery. May this collection serve as a beacon of hope and solidarity for all who embark on this journey with us, honoring the beauty of femininity and the strength of the human spirit.

Conjuring Love reminds us that love, in all its forms, is a powerful force—one that has the ability to heal, to transform, and to connect us in ways we never thought possible.
