Sally Jane Brown - Illustrated Books

Beyond my work in the gallery and studio, my creative practice extends to a longtime history of illustration, a discipline that began during my tenure as Staff Artist for the Daily Nebraskan at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. To date, I have illustrated four published collections, including two recipients of the Nebraska Book Award for Illustration: Intimates and Fools (2014, Les Femmes Folles Books) and Leaves of Absence (2015, Red Dashboard Books), both featuring the poetry of Laura Madeline Wiseman. My more recent collaborations with poet Renée K. NicholsonWhat We Do in the Hollows (2024) and Feverdream (2026, Redhawk Press)—continue to explore a visual language that is both feminist and raw. Utilizing a combination of tactile body printing and visceral ink and pencil drawing, my illustrations seek to translate the rhythmic, emotional weight of the written word into a permanent, physical presence on the page.
