As Mother’s Day approaches, I find myself reflecting on the many roles I play in life, especially as a mother artist. My series I began in 2013, “What Will Her Kids Think?” delves into the intersection of motherhood and artistry, inviting viewers to see the female form through a fresh, conceptual lens.
My body prints abstract the female form, challenging societal ideals and celebrating the beauty of the female body in a way that is both conceptually stunning and thought-provoking. Inspired by artist Yves Klein but driven by a feminist approach (in lineage of artists Carolee Schneemann, Ana Mendieta and Brigid Berlin among others who use their body as paintbrush), my work empowers me as the artist, director, and model.
Through my art, I confront perceptions of nudity, motherhood, and the impact of artistic expression on children. I acknowledge the societal gaze that often fixates on a mother’s role rather than appreciating the depth and meaning of her artwork. This series serves as a powerful commentary on the inseparability of motherhood and artistry, challenging viewers to question their assumptions and biases.
By involving my children in the creative process, I not only nurture their artistic curiosity but also highlight the intimate connection between motherhood and creativity. This Mother’s Day, I celebrate mothers like myself (Why not?) who fearlessly embrace their artistry, pushing boundaries, and fostering meaningful dialogues about body image, sexuality, and gender identity.
Cheers to all the mothers out there shaping the world with their art and passion! 🌸✨
