Peering Bodies & Mini Masterpieces: A Feminist Exploration at The Manos Gallery

24 small drawings with wooden frames
Our installation at The Manos Gallery, September 2024.

Last Saturday night, The Manos Gallery in Tarentum, Pennsylvania, opened up their exhibit 24 Minis with contributions by 45 artists (open through September)! Each contributing 24, 6”x6” works! I was honored to have my 24 drawing/watercolors, “Peering Body: Feminist Tributes,” in collaboration with my boyfriend, woodworker Brian Law, who made the screen frames (pictured, read abbreviated statement below). The aura was exciting, as crowds were bustling, folks noticeably in awe throughout the cool space!

It was such an honor to see my work in this stellar gallery alongside other esteemed and amazing artists, many of whom I delightedly met for the first time, and many of whom I hope to meet soon, such as: stellar intricate tessellation folded art by Madonna Yoder (@gatheringfolds), and charming, a bit eerie, yet undeniably endearing little creatures by Rafi Perez (@rafiwashere).

There is way more to explore, I encourage you to visit if you’re in the Pittsburgh area and follow Manos on socials (IG themanosgalleryofficial, FB https://www.facebook.com/Themanosgallery).

for lots of cool images and videos of the show!

Here’s our “Peering Body” abbreviated statement:

In my latest series of 24 nude self-portraits, I explore themes of selfhood and feminism, balancing vulnerability and empowerment while challenging societal views on the female body. Inspired by feminist artists like Mickalene Thomas and Lee Krasner, I incorporate their aesthetic into the backgrounds, creating a dialogue with the legacy of feminist art. Each portrait is framed with hand-crafted wooden frames by Brian M. Law (also my partner), symbolizing the constraints and freedoms placed on the female form. These frames, made from reclaimed cherry and birch plywood, play with light and shadow, inviting viewers to reflect on visibility, agency, and body positivity. This work celebrates resilience and self-acceptance, envisioning a future of inclusivity and respect.
